While looking for something else during my devotional time this morning I ran across a sheet that Marty Dupree at the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina gave me some time ago.  It is titled "Preparing for Personal Revival" and gives some practical questions to guide one's spiritual development.

I read through the questions and of course found that I am doing well on some and not on others.  However, the one that really gets me is "Are my personal devotions consistent and meaningful?"  I wish I could answer yes to this, but I really can't.  I struggle with this.  It seems that I am always distracted by something else (like writing this blog post) and that I can never quite find something to read in God's word that captivates me.

I just don't think it should be like this.  I really do believe that God's word is "God-breathed " (2 Timothy 3:16) and that is is necessary to equip me as a believer.  I just can't seem to execute well.  I understand that it takes discipline, but it doesn't seem like it should be this hard.  I should love to read God's word!

Many of the other questions deal with the "fruits" for ones faith.  On many of these I feel like I am doing respectably well.  This is the strange thing, I feel like I am failing on one of the foundational elements, but the results are still positive.  What does this say?

Re: Preparing for Personal Revival

Spence,

Wouldn't writing a blog post about your walk with God count as a devotional? I have been thinking, what exactly is having devotions? Is it just reading the Word, or is there more to it then that? Is it another religious exercise? If so I believe God has to hate those, he told the Israelites that He hates their new moon festivals and Sabbaths after all.

So what does it mean to have devotions?

Re: Preparing for Personal Revival

Thanks for the comments Jeff...really good insight. I think you are on to something. I picked up blogging again because I found that I had a very difficult time journaling if I knew that no one but me was ever going to read it. I would end up writing incomplete thoughts down in my journal that didn't mean much of anything when I read them later. the discipline of blogging really helps me to dig into the scriptures I am looking at.

I just remarked to my wife this morning that I spent an hour and half reading and studying to write today's post when I would normally just spend 30 minutes or so. In this sense, I think that blogging really supports good devotional time, if it isn't a devotional time in itself.

Ephesians 2:8-9
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
